Unlocking Global Spending: How Chipper Cash Built a Modern Card Program for Africa with Bridge

April 21, 2026

Introduction

Home to one of the youngest and fastest-growing populations in the world, Africa is rapidly emerging as a digital-first economy. But while millions of people across the continent are eager to spend on global services and retailers, traditional payment methods make it difficult to pay in USD, limiting many Africans’ access to the global economy.

By building an international payments platform designed for cross-border access, Chipper Cash makes it simple for users across Africa to pay in dollars from anywhere. Today, Chipper Cash is one of Africa’s largest financial technology platforms, serving more than 7 million users across several African countries.

“Our mission is to provide seamless financial services across Africa, and that includes giving our customers a reliable and easy way to spend their money globally.” said Maijid Moujaled, President and Co-founder of Chipper Cash.

Challenge

In countries like Nigeria, one of Chipper Cash’s largest and fastest-growing markets, cash is still king. However, younger Nigerians increasingly prefer to spend their money on things like Netflix subscriptions, Amazon purchases, vacations abroad, and other international purchases. Most of these are denominated in dollars and require USD payment methods to access. Few traditional Nigerian banks offer cards that support international transactions.

After launching its service in 2018 as a peer-to-peer payment platform, in 2021 Chipper Cash partnered with Visa to launch the Chipper USD Card in Nigeria. The Chipper USD Card enables Chipper Cash customers to spend their money anywhere in the world where Visa cards are accepted, including on digital services and at retailers.

As the program grew, so did the demands on Chipper Cash’s infrastructure. The company needed a modern, developer-friendly card issuance partner to help it issue cards quickly, process transactions without friction, roll out new features, and expand access to the Chipper USD Card across new markets.

Solution

To support the next stage of growth for the Chipper USD Card, Chipper Cash partnered with Bridge and Stripe to expand its card issuance and payment infrastructure further.

Bridge gave Chipper Cash a unified platform for building and managing card programs that combines orchestration along with card issuance, program management, and global payment capabilities in a single integration. This allows Chipper Cash to manage their card program more efficiently while maintaining consistent performance and reliability for users. Using Bridge’s platform, Chipper Cash can programmatically issue and manage cards, process transactions, and ensure funds are reliably available at the point of purchase.

Behind the scenes, Bridge manages the complexity of cross-border payments so Chipper Cash can easily process international transactions without worrying about manual processes or fragmented banking relationships. Bridge’s flexible APIs give the engineering team complete control over how cards are created, funded, and managed, while Bridge’s built-in program support helps Chipper Cash manage the operational requirements of running a global card program.

“Our mission is to provide seamless financial services across Africa, and our partnership with Bridge will enable us to continue to empower our customers with access to the global economy.”

Results

By partnering with Bridge, Chipper Cash has been able to deliver a faster, more reliable card experience for its users in Nigeria while creating a clear path for expansion into new markets. Because Bridge makes it simple to issue cards globally through a single API, Chipper Cash is positioned to scale its card program to additional countries across the world without requiring new partnerships or technology integrations each time.

As Chipper Cash expands into new markets, Bridge provides a scalable foundation that grows with them.  And because Bridge is backed by Stripe, one of the world’s leading global payments platforms, Chipper Cash is confident that its card program is backed by a company that is positioned to serve as a proven, long-term partner.

Conclusion

Partnering with Bridge has helped Chipper Cash redefine what’s possible for global payments across Africa. "With Bridge we found a robust offering for our card issuing tech stack that enables greater flexibility and scalability, especially as we look to expand to more geographies and evolve our product faster,” said Moujaled.

By combining modern card infrastructure with integrated program management and global payments capabilities, Chipper Cash can deliver fast, reliable access to international spending removing the friction and limitations of traditional systems.

Backed by the expertise of Stripe, Chipper Cash has built a scalable foundation for growth that will allow it to expand into new markets more efficiently and bring global financial access to millions more users.

“Chipper Cash is unlocking global services for Nigerians in a way that’s never been seen before. We are proud that they’ve turned to Bridge to help create a reliable, scalable, and secure customer experience as they continue to grow.”
